Validation of Dm-pact Modeled Snow Backscattering Coefficient for Arbitrary Shaped Particles in Ku-band

چکیده
In scattering modeling of the snow cover individual snow particles are often assumed to be spherical and, depending on the frequency range, either Rayleigh approximation or Mie-scattering is used for the calculation of the phase matrix. However, the complex shapes of realistic snow crystals can have a significant effect on the scattering properties at higher frequencies, especially for the cross-polarized component. In this study homogeneous snow cover is modeled with arbitrary snow crystals and the scattering properties of these particles are compared with Mie-scattering utilizing the dense medium assumption from DM-PACT method [1,2] and both results are compared against experimental data to be gathered in the coming winter with the Snowscatinstrument (polarimetric Xto Ku-band scatterometer owned by European Space Agency) in the NoSRExmeasurement campaign (October 2009 through June 2010). The campaign is organized in support of the preparation of CoReH2O mission.

Estimating Snow Water Equivalent with Backscattering at X and Ku Band Based on Absorption Loss
Snow water equivalent (SWE) is a key parameter in the Earth’s energy budget and water cycle. It has been demonstrated that SWE can be retrieved using active microwave remote sensing from space. This necessitates the development of forward models that are capable of simulating the interactions of microwaves and the snow medium. Several proposed models have described snow as a collection of spher...

This study discuss the potential of using remote sensing data from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), couple with Dense Media Radiative Transfer (DMRT) model, to constrain the snowpack's optical grain size and density calculated by the detailed snowpack model Crocus. A snowpack Electromagnetic Backscattering Model (EBM) based on DMRT compatible with X-band and Ku-band frequencies is developed from...
متن کاملEstimation of snow water equivalence using SIR-C/X-SAR. II. Inferring snow depth and particle size
The relationship between snow water equivalence (SWE) and SAR backscattering coefficients at Cand X-band (5.5 and 9.6 GHz) can be either positive or negative. Therefore, discovery of the relationship with an empirical approach is unrealistic. Instead, we estimate snow depth and particle size using SIR-C/X-SAR imagery from a physically-based first order backscattering model through analyses of t...
متن کاملEstimation of Snow Water Equivelant Using a Parameterized Snow Scattering Model
Active microwave sensors, especially high-frequency radar systems, are highly sensitive to snow pack parameters, including Snow Water Equivalent (SWE), which is a crucial parameter in the studies of hydrology and climatology. For example, studies using Ku-band observations from scatterometer QuickSCAT and POLSCAT have shown significant radar backscattering responses on SWE variations. It has be...
متن کاملSnow Cover Monitoring Using Multi-temporal Envisat/asar Data
ABSTRACT A method has been developed to apply multi-temporal Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ENVISAT/ASAR, C-Band) images to snow cover monitoring and mapping in mountainous areas. A multi-temporal dataset that includes sequences of ascending and descending ASAR wide swath and beam mode IS2 scenes acquired over Switzerland was investigated. The images were geometrically corrected to remove r...
